This work and new online resource has been supported with funding from the
Horizon Europe project PULSAR. The aim of the PULSAR consortium is to inform
European policymakers and other stakeholders on future aviation research priorities
with the focus on environmental objectives.
Future research and innovation achievements are dependent on the availability of
relevant education and training to maintain the pipeline of new researchers,
scientists and engineers.
In PULSAR, a dedicated work package on education and training, led by the
University of Southampton, has resulted in a new European Aviation Education
Roadmap. The roadmap identifies the types of subject-specific education and skills-
training that is currently available, what is required in the future, and plans
timescales and recommendations on how to deliver this education and training.
The main tasks to develop the new education roadmap included:
-
Compile a database of current subject-specific education and skills-training courses in topics connected with aviation noise and emissions. The survey of current education and training opportunities focuses on postgraduate taught courses delivered by European Higher Education Institutes (HEI) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training courses delivered by international associations, commercial agencies and professional bodies.
-
Compile responses from aviation stakeholders on their future requirements for subject-specific education and skills-training courses in topics connected with aviation noise and emissions.
-
Perform a gap analysis to identify the differences between the requirements of research and innovation stakeholders and current capabilities in education and training in topics connected with aviation noise and emissions. Use the gap analysis to inform the design of a new education roadmap focussing on sustainable aviation.
The full European Aviation Education Roadmap is available open access on Zenodo.

The data collected for the education roadmap has been used to create this new
online resource freely available for all users. This online resource contains all the
information gathered on education and training opportunities connected with
sustainable aviation.
